In the early days of the Oregon Trail, pioneers who made the treacherous journey were rewarded with vast amounts of land—640 acres for married couples. Over time, as more settlers arrived and the risks decreased, that reward was reduced to 320 acres, then 160, and eventually, land had to be purchased outright.
