House music emerged in the underground clubs of Chicago in the early 1980s. It was a response to the popular disco music of the 1970s and the rising influence of electronic music. The genre's name is believed to be derived from The Warehouse, a Chicago nightclub where the legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles played a pivotal role in developing the sound. He is often referred to as the "Godfather of House."

Knuckles and other early house DJs began experimenting with drum machines, synthesizers, and sequencers to create a more synthetic, repetitive sound compared to traditional disco music. These machines, particularly the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines, became iconic tools in house music production.
