Speed & Accuracy Rifle Course
Recently, I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the \"Rifle Speed and Accuracy\" training class conducted by Alex Schultz from Human Project Training, hosted by the USCCA at Range 2131 in Buckeye, AZ. As a retired Army veteran, it was the perfect occasion to dust off my skills and explore just how much speed and precision I could still achieve—or realistically improve upon!
First off, huge thanks to Alex Schultz, Human Project Training, the USCCA, and Range 2131 for hosting such a valuable and professional course.
For the course, I brought along three of my go-to rifles: the Noveske Irregular Defense SBR paired with a Q Trash Panda suppressor, the HK MR556 A4, and the Sig DH3 .223 Wylde Competition rifle. The targets were strategically placed from close-range engagements around 8 yards to the furthest ones stretching out to 200 yards, providing a great mix of tactical scenarios and shooting distances.
Initially, for added flair, I suited up with my Gloryfire TacVest loaded with Spartan Ceramic Level IV plates and a Condor chest rig. However, age quickly reminded me to keep things practical, prompting a swift return to basics by opting for just my battle belt for the remainder of the class. As someone frequently asked about the gear I use, you can check out my full setup details on my website.
The class had an excellent turnout with around 14-16 students coming from diverse backgrounds—truck drivers, business owners, competitive shooters, rifle manufacturers, and law enforcement officers—all united by the same drive to enhance their rifle handling capabilities.
My primary objective going into the course was clear: tighten up my rifle skills and increase my shooting speed without sacrificing accuracy. To avoid showing too much rust due to age and separation from active duty, I prepared using the Blackbeard X by Mantis, a cutting-edge dry-fire training tool. This proved invaluable in sharpening my muscle memory and identifying specific fundamental skills needing improvement, ensuring maximum effectiveness during the live-fire drills.
Alex Schultz’s instructional style was exceptional—clear, insightful, and genuinely engaging. He seamlessly guided us through topics such as optimal rifle setup, target-focused shooting, predictive versus reactive shooting, and efficient target transitions. Particularly beneficial was the detailed discussion on trigger control, highlighting methods like the flash-of-color-on-target versus the dot-on-target techniques, along with the importance of timing eye and body movement for smooth target engagement.
What stood out most about Alex's approach was his emphasis on not just demonstrating techniques but also explaining their rationale and practical applications. The dynamic exercises provided an intense yet enjoyable challenge, effectively improving my target transitions and ammunition management under pressure.
By the end of this intensive day, my confidence had significantly increased, reminding me that even as a 55-year-old veteran—likely the oldest participant there—there is always room for improvement. Thanks to Alex's expert teaching and my preparatory training with the Blackbeard X, I left the range feeling far more capable and comfortable behind the rifle.
A special shout-out to my membership supporters who continually enable me to create valuable content, and a big thank you to Scottsdale Tactical for their unwavering support.
