Sheinbaum far from outraged by the case of #Teuchitlán Jalisco.
As Mexico faces one of the most shocking security crises in recent years with the case of Teuchitlán, Jalisco, President Claudia Sheinbaum seems more concerned with defending the image of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, than demanding justice for the victims. Instead of strongly condemning the brutality of organized crime and the atrocities that occurred in Jalisco, Sheinbaum took the time to come to AMLO's defense, asking that he not be called “narco president.”
Sheinbaum's priorities have become evident: instead of focusing on the reality of the country and addressing the escalating violence, she opts to divert the conversation to Felipe Calderón, criticizing his administration and reviving old political debates. A predictable and desperate strategy that demonstrates his lack of leadership in the face of the current crisis.
The Teuchitlán case has shocked the country, as it is an area where organized crime has operated with total impunity. Despite the magnitude of the scandal, Sheinbaum has avoided directly confronting the Jalisco Cartel - New Generation (CJNG) and has preferred to focus on keeping the image of the Fourth Transformation intact, even at the cost of the suffering of the victims and their families.
The president's cynicism knows no bounds. Her attitude towards violence contrasts with her obsession to discredit past governments. While in her speeches she never misses an opportunity to point the finger at Calderón and his security strategy, she refuses to acknowledge the links between drug trafficking and López Obrador's government and the concessions given to criminal groups during his six-year term.
The double standard is evident. Under the pretext of a “new security strategy,” Sheinbaum follows AMLO's line by betting on the militarization of the country without visible results. Cartels continue to operate with total freedom, violence rates continue to rise and Mexican families live in fear, but she remains in her ideological bubble.
Sheinbaum's stance on the Teuchitlán case is a reflection of her submission to López Obrador. Her refusal to call things by their name and her lack of determination to confront organized crime only demonstrate that her presidency is a continuation of the failure of the Fourth Transformation in terms of security.
