The phoenix, a mystical bird that renews itself through fire, has fascinated people for thousands of years. Its myth symbolises hope, resilience and the cycle of death and resurrection. Its origins can be found in numerous cultures, each of which has created its own interpretation.
In ancient Egypt, the phoenix emerged as Bennu, a sacred heron associated with the sun god Ra and creation. The Bennu emerged from the flames of a sacred tree and symbolised the annual flood of the Nile and the rising of the sun - a sign of renewal and cosmic order.
The Greeks continued to shape the myth. Herodotus described the phoenix as an eagle-like bird with golden-red plumage that appears in Heliopolis every 500 years, coming from Arabia. Here it burns itself in a nest of myrrh and cinnamon in order to rise rejuvenated from the ashes. In his writings, Ovid emphasised the connection to immortality, while in early Christian texts the bird served as an allegory for the resurrection of Christ.
Similar motifs exist not only in the West, but also in Asia. China's fenghuang, often translated as ‘phoenix’, symbolises yin-yang harmony and imperial power. In Slavic myths, the firebird chases luck, but also demands courage. These variants emphasise the universal need for symbols of new beginnings.
The phoenix represents the ability to change - both personally and socially. In alchemy it stands for the purification of the soul, in literature for spiritual renewal.
Today, the phoenix serves as a metaphor for overcoming crises - be it after illness, trauma or ecological destruction. Its colours (fiery red, gold) symbolise energy and enlightenment.
The phoenix endures because it embodies hope: even from apparent endings, new things emerge. Whether in religion, art or pop culture - its circle of flames remains timeless, a reminder of human resilience and the eternal cycle of life.
