Bill Clinton made significant cuts to the federal government as President. Using his executive authority, he ordered a reduction of at least 100,000 federal positions during his first term, along with a 12 percent cut in administrative and program costs for each federal department and agency. These were just a few of the proposed reductions under his initiative to "reinvent government," or REGO, as it was called. Vice President Al Gore was tasked with overseeing the program to reduce costs, cut bureaucracy, and make the government more efficient and effective. Many have drawn comparisons between REGO and the efforts of President Trump and Elon Musk to improve government efficiency.
