(This is a fascinating interview by Dimitri Simes Jr of a Russian platoon commander that is translated to English. Like many patriotic Russians, he volunteered right away. He was initially rejected because of health reasons, yet that didn't stop him, as you will see.

He has a playful sense of humor. He also explains how so many of the young volunteers had skills that involved new technologies that the older soldiers didn't have. These younger soldiers found ways to incorporate those skill sets and also explain to higher ups how important these new approaches were for winning. As the soldiers lived & fought together, they democratically figured out who had what critical skills needed for winning.

He really drives home how the drones have changed everything. Drones are overhead 24/7 from both sides, so it is hard to do anything without being noticed. In fact, the few hours when dawn arrives is one of the few times they can move.

People often wonder why you can't use massive formations like in WW2. Large visible concentrations can easily be wiped out. This often means that 2-3 soldiers will move carefully only 100 yards during dawn to avoid detection.

He had a number of observations about the Ukrainian military approaches. It seemed like they didn't learn lessons from many of the battles. Based upon what he said and a lot of other information that I've seen, I have a few observations about this difference. First, the Russians overwhelmingly volunteered to join the military to defend their country. As you will see from his observations, many brought skills that they found ways to incorporate that helped them win, which became recognized up the chain of command. I've seen more than one mention that many soldiers who had demonstrated the best skills on the battlefield were rotated out to help train new volunteers on the best approaches.

Although the Ukrainian side had some wins early on because of NATO training and stockpiles of weapons, we all know that they are no longer volunteering & have to be dragged off the street. No one wants to be thrown into the 'meat grinder' where few survive. These soldiers are also not properly supported.

When we listen carefully to what he has to say about how drones have dramatically changed warfare, we can start asking questions about why is the US spending money on the Boeing F-43 6th generation extremely expensive fighter, instead of more drone technology? Military dynamics have drastically changed because of drones.
