West Virginia bans 7 artificial food dyes, citing potentially harmful health effects

West Virginia has enacted one of the most comprehensive statewide bans on artificial food dyes and additives, citing potential health risks.

Signed into law by Gov. Patrick Morrisey, the measure prohibits seven artificial dyes and two preservatives in food and drugs, with school meal restrictions taking effect in August 2024 and a full ban by 2028.

The move aligns with a broader push to regulate synthetic additives nationwide, following similar actions in California, CBS News has reported.

The FDA is also reassessing food dyes, recently revoking approval for Red Dye No. 3 due to cancer concerns.
