Palestinians want to be free from Hamas

Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have taken to the streets in rare protests against Hamas, the group that’s controlled the territory since 2007.

These demonstrations, which kicked off 3 days ago, are some of the biggest shows of public anger at Hamas since the war with Israel flared up in October 2023.

Twitter is full of footage of protesters marching in the town of Beit Lahia to vent their fury at Hamas. With chants of ‘Hamas out’ and ‘We want food,’ they’re railing against both the ongoing war with Israel and the desperate conditions they’re living in. This comes just days after Israel relaunched its military campaign in Gaza, after Hamas broke the ceasefire.

Even the Assembly of Southern Gaza Clans has issued a powerful call for a popular uprising against Hamas, accusing the group of gambling with Palestinians’ lives for its own narrow, self-serving interests.

The protests haven’t been peaceful. Masked Hamas militants, some armed with guns and batons, moved quickly to break up the gatherings, even beating many people. Even so, the unrest has spread, with more demonstrations popping up in places like Jabalia and Khan Younis. Online calls for nine additional protests today, hint that this could be the start of something bigger.

For many Gazans, this is a cry for survival. The local health ministry says more than 50,000 people have died in the conflict, and vast swathes of the territory are now rubble after 17 months of war.

Irish people need to be aware that the scenes that we see in Gaza, could easily be Dublin anytime soon.
