ATP PRODUCTION

ATP PRODUCTION occurs in for the majority of time in the mitochondria of a cell via a few different methods.

1. Oxidative phosphorylation:
- the mitochondria is healthy
- oxygen is present
- a fuel source (glucose or fatty acids) is present

2. Anaerobic Fermentation
- mitochondria are healthy
- oxygen is absent
- the cell survives via Fermentation

3. Aerobic Fermentation
- mitochondria are damaged
- oxygen is present, but the cell either chooses not to use it or it can't use it.
- the cells rapidly divide into cells that don't need oxygen as a survival mechanism in hopes that mitochondrial function will be restored.
