A bit of history: In 1542, the Spanish conquistadors discovered the Mayan site called "T'Hó," which means "place of the five hills." There, they discovered a settlement that reminded them of the remains of Mérida, in Extremadura, Spain. They renamed the city and used the stones from the temples to build the cathedral, government buildings, and the conquistadors' homes.
