'Appointment in Samarra' (1934) by John O'Hara
John O’Hara’s 'Appointment in Samarra' is a tragedy of self-destruction, class anxiety, and fate, set over the course of three days during Christmas 1930 in the fictional town of Gibbsville, Pennsylvania. The novel follows Julian English, a well-off but reckless car dealer, as he spirals into ruin due to his own impulsive decisions and insecurities.
Plot Overview: Day 1: The First Mistake: Julian English is a respected member of Gibbsville’s upper-class social circle, but he resents its restrictions. At a country club Christmas party, he impulsively throws a drink in the face of Harry Reilly, a wealthy and powerful Irish Catholic businessman. This act is driven by Julian’s bottled-up resentment toward Reilly’s influence in town, but it is a serious social mistake. Reilly is a key figure in Gibbsville, and Julian immediately regrets his action, realizing that it could ruin his business and reputation.
Day 2: Bad Decisions Pile Up: Instead of making amends, Julian begins to unravel. He drinks excessively, alienates his friends, and gets into a heated argument with his wife, Caroline, who is both devoted and exasperated by him. His insecurities—about his status, his masculinity, and his marriage—drive him toward even riskier behavior.
Later, Julian has a reckless affair with Helene Holman, the mistress of Ed Charney, a local gangster. This only worsens his situation, as Charney is a dangerous man who could easily destroy Julian. Meanwhile, Julian’s financial troubles deepen: Reilly, who had previously extended him business credit, now sees him as unreliable.
Day 3: The Breaking Point: As Julian’s paranoia and despair grow, he isolates himself further. He knows his reputation is collapsing, his business is in jeopardy, and his marriage may not survive his recklessness. With no way out, Julian dies by suicide in his garage, locking himself in his car and running the engine until he succumbs to carbon monoxide poisoning.
His death is not a shocking event—it feels inevitable, the tragic consequence of his own choices. The novel ends on a somber note, reinforcing the idea that Julian’s downfall was his own appointment in Samarra—an unavoidable fate brought about by his own flaws and actions.
Themes: Self-Destruction and Fate: Julian isn't ruined by outside forces; he destroys himself. His downfall seems fated, much like the fable of the 'Appointment in Samarra', where a man tries to escape death but only runs toward it.
Class and Social Anxiety: Julian belongs to Gibbsville’s upper-class Protestant elite, but he resents its hypocrisy. At the same time, he looks down on those outside it—especially the Irish Catholics like Harry Reilly, even though Reilly is wealthier and more influential.
Masculinity and Identity: Julian struggles with his role as a man, husband, and businessman. His impulsive behavior stems from his deep insecurity—about his business success, his marriage, and his standing in society.
Alcohol and Escapism: Drinking is a constant theme in the novel, symbolizing Julian’s desire to escape his reality. Every bad decision he makes is fueled by alcohol and self-pity.
Legacy and Impact: 'Appointment in Samarra' was John O’Hara’s debut novel and is considered one of the greatest American novels of the 20th century. O’Hara’s sharp, realistic dialogue and deep understanding of social dynamics made him an influential figure in American literature. The novel is a brutal, unsentimental look at human weakness, showing how a single impulsive act can unravel a life.
