A Long Road: The Journey Back from Hurricane Helene

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida. Several days of heavy rain preceded Helene in Western North Carolina, causing the ground to become extremely saturated. Lakes, rivers, and creeks rose to higher-than-normal levels.
Western North Carolinians prepared for the storm but could not have anticipated the devastation it caused on September 27 when Helene tore through the mountains.
Six months later, over 100 people have lost their lives, and several remain missing as the region grapples with the lingering effects of the storm. The sense of safety that once existed in the usually comforting mountains and valleys has vanished, along with businesses, homes, and lost loved ones.
Despite the challenges, the mountain people of Western North Carolina have demonstrated remarkable resilience. During the early days of the storm, when communication with the outside world was severely disrupted, the region survived through the unwavering support of its neighbors.
Today, this spirit of unity continues to thrive as Western North Carolinians face adversity together. Every road repaved, every bridge rebuilt, and every house rehoused serves as a testament to their collective strength and determination.
