Sheikh Muhammad Nazim Adil Al-Qabrousi Al-Haqqani, Mehmet Nazim Adil, born on 21 April 1922 in Larnaca, Cyprus, was a prominent Turkish Cypriot Sufi leader and the 40th Grand Sheikh of the Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi Order. His lineage traces back to prominent Islamic figures: his grandfather Sheikh Yeshilbash Husayn Al-Qadri linked him to Abdul Qadir Gilani, while his maternal grandfather Sheikh Kayatzade Mehmet Nazim linked him to Maulana Rumi.
In 1940, Nazim moved to Istanbul, Turkey, to study chemical engineering at Istanbul University. However, his heart turned to spiritual sciences, which led him to study classical Arabic and Islamic jurisprudence under Jamal al-Din al-Sunni, from whom he received the ijaz (permission to teach). During this period, he was initiated into Naqshbandi Sufism by Suleyman Erzarumi, who eventually directed him to Damascus, Syria, to continue his studies with his powerful Sheikh.
In 1945, Nazim arrived in Damascus and met Abdullah Faizi al-Daghistani, with whom he exchanged the Sufi oath of mutual allegiance (bay'ah). Under Abdullah's guidance, Nazim underwent rigorous spiritual training, which included periods of seclusion (khalwa) at the tomb of Abdul Qadir al-Jilani in various places such as Medina and Baghdad. This mentorship continued until Abdullah's death in 1973, after which Nazim succeeded him, receiving the secrets of the Naqshbandi "Golden Chain" and being allowed to teach in six other Sufi orders: the Chishtiyya, Qadiriyya, Mawlaviyya, Rifa'i, Shadhiliyya, and Badawiyya.
Nazim's influence spread globally as he traveled extensively in the Islamic world and the West, spreading the teachings of love, peace, and tolerance found in traditional Islam. He strongly opposed extremism and engaged in interfaith dialogue. In 1996 and 1998, he attended the International Islamic Unity Conference in the United States as a special guest, which was attended by over 160 Islamic scholars, including the Grand Mufti of Egypt and the Grand Mufti of Russia. In 2000, he attended the United Nations Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders as a speaker. In 2001, accompanied by his representative and son-in-law, Sheikh Hisham Kabbani, Nazim Naqshbandi Haqqani embarked on an Eastern World Tour, visiting countries such as Uzbekistan, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Throughout his life, Nazim maintained close ties with notable political figures, such as the late Turkish President, Turgut Özal, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denkta?. Born just before the fall of the Ottoman Empire, he admired Ottoman history and civilization, contrasting its culture with that of the modern-day Republic of Turkey. In 1994, at a Welfare Party conference in Antwerp, Belgium, Nazim addressed a large gathering of Islamists, including figures such as Abdullah Gül, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, and Necmettin Erbakan, discussing the importance of Islamic values ??and praising the Ottoman Caliphate.
Nazim resided in Lefkada, Northern Cyprus, where numerous disciples from all over the world came to benefit from his wisdom and teachings. He was bestowed the title of "Qayyum al-Zaman" by Hazrat Ishan, the Supreme Imam of the Naqshbandi Order. Despite his extensive travels and teachings, Nazim did not write any books. However, many of his discourses have been compiled by his followers in publications such as "The Divine Kingdom" (1995), "The Path of Spiritual Virtue" (2002), and the six-volume series "Liberating the Soul: A Guide to Spiritual Development" (2002–2007).
On 17 April 2014, Nazim was taken from his home in Lefke to the Near East University Hospital in North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, due to respiratory distress. He remained under medical care until his death on 7 May 2014 at the age of 92. His death marked the end of an era for the Naqshbandi Haqqani Sufi Order, but his teachings continue to inspire and guide many people around the world.
Following his death, Nazim was laid to rest in Lefke, Northern Cyprus, where his shrine has become a center for pilgrims and followers. The shrine stands as a testament to his enduring influence in the realm of Islamic Sufism and serves as a place where devotees and scholars alike gather to honor his memory and be inspired by his teachings. The shrine not only commemorates his life but also symbolizes the continuation of the spiritual path that he passionately preached throughout his life.
Shaykh Nazim's legacy is preserved through the numerous centers and communities established worldwide under the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order. These centers continue to disseminate his teachings, emphasizing the core Sufi principles of love, tolerance, and the remembrance of God. His life and work have left an indelible mark on contemporary Sufism, bridging cultural and geographical divides, and fostering a deeper understanding of Islamic spirituality in the modern world.
With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Nasir Khusraw and the history of his Shrine.
