Solving 9 Problems With Seed Germination & Young Seedlings

We've got another installment in our growing from seed series! This one talks about pretty much all of the potential problems that you can run into with germination and early plant growth when growing from seed.

We wanted to produce a "problems when growing from seed" video, but as we thought about it, we had to break out the different phases of growth. Put simply, seeds, baby seedlings and maturing garden transplants have very different needs, preferred environments and potential problems that can affect them.

On a long enough time scale, most gardeners will run into almost all of these issues when growing from seed. Some of them are beginner level problems and some are much more advanced problems, only seen when the gardener pursues more obscure and challenging plants. We tried to be as comprehensive as possible and hit the entire spectrum, while still keeping a manageable video length. No one is asking for a 60 minute episode on growing from seed problems!

One glaring thing that I missed when planning this video was the discussion around humidity. I should have combined this with temperature, it was an inadvertent oversight. (Making videos is quite hard and there's only so much I'm willing to "fix in post!") The gist is that very young seedlings need relatively high humdity to increase their survival rates. But, as we discuss, this is also a fairly careful balance between high humidity and promoting an environment that encourages fungal growth and algae.
