Revelations 3, ep. 80
Hi, I’m Sal Lopez Executive Director of Ozark Hunger Relief, I am doing this to hopefully find some sponsors (tax deductible donations) for an office in Prairie Grove, Ar. I have seen and fed many children who wander around here. I thought if I started a non-profit, the community would be happy to help. Nope! I’ve had nothing but suspicion, derision, denial, and was ripped off for everything I had, by another food pantry. They offered to help, then when I delivered everything, I had, then they told me to stay away from them, but subsequently asked me for more donations. It has been horribly depressing, but I will persevere and get this office open.
My vision is to be a community resource center, but the main goal is to feed hungry kids, whose parents are drug addicts, and or alcoholics. I guess some are just poor. Anyway, I need help and will advertise for you, and have signs of acknowledgement for every donor, proportionate for the donation.
Anyway, this episode is Revelation 3 and it continues Jesus’ messages to the seven churches of Asia, as recorded by the apostle John. This chapter contains the final three letters, addressed to the churches in Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. Each message includes commendations (if any), rebukes, warnings, and promises to those who remain faithful.
1. The Letter to the Church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6) – The Spiritually Dead Church
Jesus’ Identity: He introduces Himself as the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars, emphasizing His divine authority and knowledge of the churches.
Rebuke: Though Sardis has a reputation for being alive, Jesus declares them spiritually dead. They appear active in works, but their faith lacks true spiritual vitality.
Warning: Jesus urges them to wake up, strengthen what remains, and repent before it is too late. If they do not, He will come like a thief in the night, catching them unprepared.
Commendation: A few faithful believers in Sardis have not "soiled their garments," meaning they have remained pure and righteous.
Promise to the Overcomers: Those who remain faithful will be clothed in white (symbolizing purity), their names will never be erased from the Book of Life, and Jesus will confess their names before God and the angels.
Key Lesson: Religious activity does not equal true spiritual life. Jesus calls for genuine faith and spiritual vigilance.
2. The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13) – The Faithful Church
Jesus’ Identity: He describes Himself as the Holy and True One, who holds the key of David, meaning He has the authority to open and close doors that no one else can.
Commendation: Philadelphia has remained faithful despite having little strength. Jesus acknowledges their perseverance in keeping His word and not denying His name.
Promise of an Open Door: Jesus sets before them an "open door" that no one can shut, likely referring to opportunities for ministry, salvation, and entering the Kingdom.
Promise of Protection: Jesus says He will keep them from the hour of trial that will come upon the world. Some interpret this as a promise of protection from coming judgment.
Exhortation: They are urged to hold fast to what they have so that no one takes their crown.
Promise to those who Overcomer:
They will become pillars in the temple of God (symbolizing permanence and security).
They will bear the name of God, the name of the New Jerusalem, and Jesus' new name, signifying eternal belonging to Him.
Key Lesson: Faithfulness, even in weakness, brings great reward. Jesus opens doors that no one can shut and provides security for those who remain steadfast.
3. The Letter to the Church in Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22) – The Lukewarm Church
Jesus’ Identity: He calls Himself the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation, emphasizing His authority and reliability.
Rebuke: Unlike other churches, Laodicea receives no praise. Instead, Jesus condemns them for being lukewarm—neither hot nor cold. Their complacency makes Him want to "spit them out" (vomit them) from His mouth.
False Security: The Laodiceans see themselves as rich and self-sufficient, but Jesus declares them to be wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked—completely unaware of their spiritual poverty.
Call to Repentance: Jesus counsels them to buy from Him:
Gold refined in fire (true spiritual wealth).
White garments (righteousness to cover their spiritual nakedness).
Eye salve (spiritual insight to heal their blindness).
A Personal Invitation: Jesus expresses love for them despite their condition and stands at the door of their hearts, knocking. If they open to Him, He will dine with them, signifying intimate fellowship.
Promise to the Overcomers: Those who repent and remain faithful will sit with Him on His throne, sharing in His reign.
🡆 Key Lesson: Spiritual complacency is dangerous. True fulfillment comes from depending on Christ, not on worldly wealth.
Overall Themes in Revelation 3
Spiritual Vigilance is Necessary – Sardis was spiritually asleep and needed to wake up.
Faithfulness Leads to Reward – Philadelphia, though weak, was praised for their perseverance.
Self-Sufficiency is Deceptive – Laodicea’s wealth made them blind to their spiritual need.
Jesus’ Authority and Sovereignty – He alone holds the key to eternal life and the future of the churches.
A Call to Repentance – Jesus rebukes out of love and desires His people to turn back to Him.
Overcomers Will Be Rewarded – Those who remain faithful will receive eternal rewards, including new names, white garments, and places of honor in God’s kingdom.
Final Takeaway
Revelation 3 presents a contrast between churches that are spiritually dead, faithful, or complacent. Jesus gives stern warnings but also offers hope to those who turn back to Him. The messages remain relevant today, urging believers to stay spiritually awake, faithful in trials, and dependent on Christ rather than material wealth.
I hope you are a Christian, If not please do so now, you have nothing to lose and Heaven to gain! Just say!
Heavenly Father, I believe in the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and I beg you to forgive me for my many sins in the name of Jesus Christ and take me to heaven, Please.
There now you will be with us in the Millennial Reign and it will be glorious!
