Recently Mahmoud Khalil a Syrian-born Palestinian activist and former graduate student at Columbia University was arrested in concert with pro-Hamas activism that led to his legal residency status being removed and him being detained in an ICE detention center awaiting deportation.

Given that he was not in the country illegally, there is much debate on the jurisdiction and legality of his deportation.
