Dan was born into a family of Mexican immigrants. He was raised on the streets of LA, where he got involved in fights and dreamed of joining a Mexican gang. However, he eventually enlisted in the U.S. Marines and went to war in Afghanistan, where he spent two years as a sapper. The outcome of that deployment was post-traumatic stress disorder, which hindered his life.
Dan couldn't find his place; he worked various jobs and traveled, but all this time he dreamed of going to Siberia. He had heard a lot about this region but didn't even realize that distant Siberia was part of Russia.
Finally, in the spring of 2022, he ended up in Irkutsk, where he was almost beaten up, mistaken for a spy due to his English language skills. Now he lives on the shore of Lake Baikal, building his dream home, and is soon to marry his Russian fiancée. After settling in Slyudyanka, he started his blog ‘Wild Siberia’, where he talks about his life.
Did he kill anyone in Afghanistan? Why does he feel safer in Russia than in the USA, and how do the mentalities of the two peoples differ –in this video.
