Stories of Hope from the Coconut Fields with Erik Olson
What started as a simple quest for a gentle moisturizer for his children turned into a life-changing mission for Eric, affectionately known as the "coconut guy." Listen as we uncover Eric's incredible journey from personal need to social entrepreneurship in the Philippines, where his coconut oil business has become a beacon of hope for rural farmers facing the grim realities of "copra slavery." Eric's commitment to fair trade practices not only offers economic relief but also ensures the sustainability of his high-quality coconut oil, which retains vital micronutrients, setting it apart from typical market offerings. With a heart for service, Eric demonstrates how business can be both socially responsible and financially sustainable.
The episode also reveals the inspiring stories of individuals like Ivy and Angeline, whose lives have been transformed by employment opportunities from a company named Dignity. Against all odds, Ivy returned to her hometown after completing college, rising to a leadership position and igniting a wave of positive change in the community, from improved infrastructure to a renewed sense of hope. Angeline, once unable to read or write, now stands as a testament to the life-altering impact of compassionate business practices. As we imagine a dream dinner with figures like Jesus and Desmond Tutu, we reflect on redemption, the joys of Middle Eastern cuisine, and the boundless potential of businesses driven by a servant's heart.
Erik Olson, business entrepreneur and CEO of Dignity Made sold his business in 2003 to serve the oppressed. After 10 years of humanitarian work, Erik teamed up with his Father-in-law to stop the exploitation of coconut farmers in the Philippines and started Dignity Made. Erik lives in St. Paul, MN with his wife, his two squirrely kids and their border collie mutt.
