In this inaugural Classroom Edition of “Unwitting Assets,” we decode the art of steganography — hiding secret messages in plain sight. From ancient Greeks tattooing codes on shaved heads to spies embedding intel in images during the Cold War, we break down this covert craft’s history into a clear, visual snapshot.

Steganography is the art and science of concealing a message within another medium — be it text, an object, or digital data — so that its very existence remains undetected by unauthorized observers.

Unlike cryptography, which encrypts messages to make them unintelligible, steganography prioritizes invisibility over obfuscation. This practice has evolved across millennia, adapting to the technologies and needs of each era.
