The Carrington Event of 1859

The Carrington Event was a massive solar storm that struck Earth, causing the most intense geomagnetic storm ever recorded.

The surprising ignition of plastic-sheathed copper wiring was first noted in 1859 when the massive solar ejection shorted out and then ignited telegraph lines across the entire United States and all of Europe, and auroras were seen as far south as Rome and Hawaii.

The event was named after British astronomer Richard Carrington, who observed a white light blast on the sun and linked it to the phenomenon. The storm was caused by a solar flare that sent charged particles into Earth's magnetic field, creating a strong electric current that disrupted telegraph lines and shocked operators.
