Zombies - After zombies immigrated to American literature, they came to represent enslavement to capitalism - insatiable appetite was a metaphor for a consumer society on steroids - that the seminal 1978 zombie film Dawn of the Dead is set in a shopping mall

Zombies, evolved from Haiti & represent Haitians’ collective feelings about colonialism & being forced into slavery by white masters

mid-1990s saw the introduction of Resident Evil & The House of the Dead, 2 break-out successes of video games featuring zombie enemies which would later go on to become highly influential & well-known

the games were followed by a wave of low-budget Asian zombie films such as zombie comedy Bio Zombie (1998) & action film Versus (2000) & then a new wave of popular Western zombie films in the early 2000s

Resident Evil & House of the Dead films, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, & the British zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead (2004) - "zombie apocalypse" concept, in which the civilized world is brought low by a global zombie infestation, has since become a staple of modern popular art, seen in such media as The Walking Dead franchise

What does the undead symbolize? - The symbol of the undead is an expression of our feeling of living a half-life, one in which mindless consumption is prized over the fight for individuation

-One of the most prevalent readings of the zombie has been to see it as a symbol of class oppression & dehumanization of the worker under reckless capitalism & imperialism

Severe dehydration -feeling unusually tired (lethargic) or confused, and you think you may be dehydrated

-dizziness when you stand up that doesn't go away after a few seconds

-not passing urine for 8 hours -a weak pulse -a rapid pulse -fits (seizures) -a low level of conciousness

Aliens: Scientists explored the possibility of extraterrestrial life long before aliens became a fascination in popular culture. Aliens serve as a mirror to our species. Our conception of aliens can teach us about our fragility & the need to grow up as a species if we are to avoid one of the dystopian scenarios of our human-made alien tales
