May 18, 1965 - President Johnson announced today approval of the first group of preschool summer guidance centers in Project Head Start. The program is aimed at giving culturally deprived and poverty-stricken children a better chance when they enter school next fall.
The President made public a list of 1,676 project grants that will result in the creation of 9,508 preschool centeres to serve 375,862 children.
