In 1976 inventor Stanley Meyer created a car that could run on water, based on the principle of splitting water molecules into their atomic building blocks, burning the hydrogen to create energy and then releasing oxygen, therefore generating no carbon emissions.

He even claimed the vehicle was able to travel from New York to Los Angeles on just 22 gallons of water.

Stanley died under mysterious circumstances after previously stating that he had been threatened several times by oil conglomerates from around the world.
