LST-179 sunk by a torpedo from USS Menhaden (SS-377) off Pearl Harbor on December 13th 1945

LST-179 was laid down on February 7th 1943 at Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., Evansville, Indiana. Launched on May 30th 1943 and commissioned on July 3rd that same year, with Lt. George D. Jagels in command.

During World War II, LST-179 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater. She took part in the Gilbert Islands operations from November 13th to December 8th 1943. She was sunk during the West Loch disaster alongside 5 other LSTs at Pearl Harbor on May 21st 1944. On that day, she was moored with LST-205, LST-225, LST-274, LST-43, LST-69, LST-353, and LST-39. No crew members were lost aboard the ship during this incident.

LST-179 was struck from the Navy Register on July 18th 1944. In 1945, she was raised but deemed too expensive to be repaired thus she was towed out to sea and sunk again as a target ship. On December 13th 1945 she was struck by a single torpedo from USS Menhaden (SS-377) off Pearl Harbor and sank by the stern. The torpedo was running at a depth of 15 feet, approximately 8 feet below the LST's keel.
