Today, Outkast remains one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time. They are also one of the most commercially successful. They’ve sold more than 20 million records. They’ve been streamed nearly 6 billion times. Most importantly, Outkast remains in a category all their own. Rarely has a duo complemented each other as well as Antwan Patton and André Benjamin. Patton, the more conventional rapper who always seemed more in touch with what was trending, and Benjamin, the poet who never cared much for trends and liked to experiment. They were so powerful as a duo because they made each other so much better. Outkast were undoubtedly leaders in hip-hop, single handedly helping to create new genres and MOVEMENTS. They truly were outsiders who became insiders by being true to themselves. Pioneers. Innovators. Boundary pushers. They helped popularize Southern hip-hop and progressive rap arguably more than any other hip-hop act. They dramatically expanded hip-hop’s appeal overall. Heck, they redefined what hip-hop even was.
