Genesis 39 ep. 81
Hi, I’m Sal Lopez Executive Director of Ozark Hunger Relief, I am doing this to hopefully find some sponsors (tax deductible donations) for an office in Prairie Grove, Ar. I have seen and fed many children who wander around here. I thought if I started a non-profit, the community would be happy to help. Nope! I’ve had nothing but suspicion, derision, denial, and was ripped off for everything I had, by another food pantry. They offered to help, then when I delivered everything, I had, then they told me to stay away from them, but subsequently asked me for more donations. It has been horribly depressing, but I will persevere and get this office open.
My vision is to be a community resource center, but the main goal is to feed hungry kids, whose parents are drug addicts, and or alcoholics. I guess some are just poor. Anyway, I need help and will advertise for you, and have signs of acknowledgement for every donor, proportionate for the donation.
Anyway, this episode is on Genesis 39.
Faithful in the Fire: A Sermon on Genesis 39
Introduction:
Genesis 39 presents a powerful picture of integrity, temptation, suffering, and the sustaining presence of God. It focuses on Joseph, a man who went from favored son to slave, and from slave to prisoner—not because he did anything wrong, but because he did what was right. This chapter invites us to consider how we respond when faithfulness leads not to reward, but to problems. Today, we’ll explore how Joseph's story in Genesis 39 teaches us to remain faithful in the fire—when life is unjust, when temptation knocks, and when it seems God is silent. We all are tested in one way or another, Joseph was tested very thoroughly. He passed with flying colors!
I. God’s Presence in the Pit (Genesis 39:1–6)
Joseph in Egypt: A Slave, Not Forgotten
Sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph arrives in Egypt, purchased by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.
Despite his circumstances, verse 2 says, "The Lord was with Joseph," and he became successful. God Blessed everything that Joseph did, we are not sure why, but It seems that Joseph's prayers and steadfast faith helped him a lot, I would recommend you try to copy Joseph in his strong faith and daily prayers. Joseph ended up saving the civilized world from famine, this life is only a test, you determine your future in eternity with how you acknowledge God.
Prosperity in Adversity
Potiphar sees that the Lord is with Joseph and entrusts him with leadership over his household.
Joseph models how excellence and diligence—even in unfair situations—can be a testimony to God’s favor.
II. Tempted but True (Genesis 39:7–12)
The Test of Integrity
Potiphar’s wife attempts to seduce Joseph. His response is both moral and spiritual: "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
Joseph recognizes that sin is not just against people but ultimately against God (Psalm 51:4).
Fleeing from Sin
Joseph doesn’t negotiate or linger—he runs. In a culture that sometimes admires flirtation with danger, Joseph’s escape teaches us the wisdom of fleeing temptation.
1 Corinthians 10:13 reminds us that God provides a way out in every temptation. Joseph took that exit.
III. Suffering for Righteousness (Genesis 39:13–20)
Falsely Accused
Potiphar’s wife turns the narrative and falsely accuses Joseph of assault. He is punished not for doing wrong, but for doing right.
The story reminds us that righteousness does not always lead to reward in this life. Sometimes it leads to prison.
Faithfulness Over Fairness
Joseph’s faithfulness stands in contrast to his unfair treatment. This moment asks us: will we continue to trust God when doing right costs us?
IV. God’s Faithfulness in the Furnace (Genesis 39:21–23)
God Was Still With Him
In prison, the same refrain returns: "But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love."
God’s presence doesn’t always deliver us from trouble, but it sustains us through it. Joseph finds favor with the prison keeper and rises again in leadership.
Preparing for Purpose
What looks like a setback is actually a setup. God is positioning Joseph for his future role in Pharaoh’s court.
Romans 8:28 affirms that in all things—even betrayal, slavery, and prison—God is working for the good of those who love Him.
V. Lessons for Today
Faithfulness is not Conditional
Joseph remained faithful in prosperity and in prison. Our faith should not be dictated by our circumstances.
Temptation is a Test of Trust
In moments of temptation, our response reveals whether we trust God’s timing and provision more than immediate gratification.
God is With You
Whether in a pit, a prison, or a palace, God's presence is the ultimate source of peace and success.
Injustice is Not the End
Like Joseph, we may suffer for righteousness. But the story is not over. God writes the final chapter.
Conclusion:
Genesis 39 reminds us that being faithful doesn’t always bring instant reward—but it always brings God’s presence. Joseph’s journey through slavery, temptation, and prison prepares him for greater purpose. If you are in a season of hardship, misunderstood, or standing alone in integrity, take heart: God is with you in the fire. And what man meant for evil, God can use for good.
Call to Action:
Where do you need to be faithful today? Is it in your workplace, in resisting temptation, in a season of unjust suffering? Let Joseph’s example challenge and inspire you. Trust God in the fire. He is preparing something far greater than you can yet see.
