Starz, an American hard rock and power pop band from New Jersey, emerged in 1976 after evolving from Looking Glass and Fallen Angels, with a lineup of Michael Lee Smith (vocals), Richie Ranno (guitar), Brendan Harkin (guitar), Pieter Sweval (bass), and Joe X. Dube (drums). Managed by Bill Aucoin of Kiss fame, they signed to Capitol Records and released four albums in quick succession: Starz (1976), Violation (1977), Attention Shoppers! (1978), and Coliseum Rock (1978), blending heavy riffs with power pop hooks and producing hits like “Cherry Baby.” Though commercial success eluded them, their cult following grew, and they became cited influences on Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister. After splitting in 1979, members regrouped under various banners including Hellcats, later reviving Starz with reunion shows, live releases (Live in Action, 1989), and the independent album Requiem (1992). Through lineup changes and decades of activity, including tours into the 2000s and a co headlining run with Angel in 2019, Starz maintained their reputation as a cult favorite whose blend of hard rock grit and melodic sensibility left a lasting mark on the genre.
