Hedy Lamarr, originally named Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, was born on November 9, 1914, in Austria and passed away on January 19, 2000. She was both an actress and an inventor in America. Following a short initial career in film in Czechoslovakia, which featured the provocative erotic love story Ecstasy (1933), she escaped from her first spouse, Friedrich Mandl, and covertly relocated to Paris. While in London, she encountered Louis B. Mayer provided her with a contract for a film in Hollywood. Lamarr rose to fame as a film star through her role in the romantic drama Algiers (1938). She continued to succeed with the Western Boom Town (1940) and the drama White Cargo (1942). The film that brought Lamarr the most acclaim was the religious epic Samson and Delilah, released in 1949. Before her last film came out in 1958, she also performed on television. In 1960, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as an honor.
At the onset of World War II, Lamarr, together with George Antheil, co-developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that employed spread spectrum and frequency hopping techniques to counteract the risk of radio jamming posed by the Axis powers. The technology went unused in operational systems until following World War II, and even then, it was utilized without regard to its patent.
