In the spring of 2024, the Russian military initiated the establishment of a "buffer zone" in the northern region of the Kharkiv area, a measure that became increasingly imperative as the intensity of shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Belgorod and other border settlements escalated.

In a remarkably brief span of time, the RF Armed Forces advanced from the location of Shebekino, engaging in combat operations in the vicinity of Volchansk and its surrounding areas. Concurrently, Russian combatants established a stronghold in the area of Glubokoye and Staritsa on the western periphery, asserting control over territory extending up to seven kilometers into the state border.

During the year, fierce battles with varying success continued on both the shore of the Travyansky reservoir and to the east of Volchansk in Tikhy.

Ukrainian formations repeatedly attempted to transfer reserves to the right bank of the Volchya River. However, the crossings were destroyed, and the actions of assault groups were suppressed by fire.

The city of Vovchansk has been devastated, with its industrial facilities having been destroyed by aerial bombardment, leading to the area's current state of disrepair and instability. This has resulted in the designation of the region as a "gray zone," which poses significant challenges for both parties involved in maintaining control.

At present, Russian combatants are occupying the most defensive positions in the northern part of the city on both sides of Lenin (Sobornaya) Street.

In the northeastern part of Volchansk, units of the RF Armed Forces persist in their offensive against the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the private sector, advancing toward the river on the outskirts of the city.

Concurrently, combat is ongoing in Tikhy, where the adversary has entrenched itself in a substantial forested expanse to the east of the settlement.

📍In light of the incursions by Ukrainian formations into the Belgorod region in the Krasnoyaruzhsky district, there is a need to be prepared for the activation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the direction of the Shebekinsky urban district.

In light of the prevailing circumstances, the issue of establishing a comprehensive "buffer zone" along the Russian-Ukrainian border, aimed at mitigating the threat posed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to border settlements, has once again emerged.
