BLACK SABBATH - Master of Reality

Master of Reality is a legendary album by Black Sabbath, released on July 21, 1971. It’s their third studio album and a cornerstone of heavy metal history. The band—Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—delivered a darker, heavier sound here, with Iommi tuning his guitar down three semitones to C# to ease finger strain and create that signature sludgy tone. Tracks like "Sweet Leaf," a love letter to weed, and "Children of the Grave," with its apocalyptic vibes, are pure Sabbath gold. The album’s got this raw, ominous feel—Geezer’s bass lines rumble like an earthquake, and Ozzy’s vocals cut through the haze like a banshee.

Critics at the time were mixed—Rolling Stone called it "monotonous"—but history’s been kinder. It hit No. 5 in the UK, No. 8 in the US, and went double platinum. Fans and musicians still worship it; Matt Pike from High on Fire even said it’s “the heaviest thing that ever hit my skull.”
