Empowering Women Through Self-Defense (Part 1)

Ask. Tell. Make. That’s the first line of defense for anyone, but today we’re focusing on self-defense tactics for women. I reached out to my close friend, Matt Thornton, owner of Straight Blast Gym (SBG), author of The Gift of Violence: Practical Knowledge for Surviving and Thriving in a Dangerous World, and fifth degree black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu.

I asked Matt to share some of the tips he and his instructors teach in women's self-defense classes. Matt’s wife, Salome, who’s a purple belt in jiu jitsu, joins us. At the end of the video, Salome sums up what learning self-defense has done for her: “I feel confident enough in my own body and my ability to stand up for myself, which gives me so much more freedom.” This is the first video in a series of three. I hope that you don’t just enjoy it, but that it motivates and empowers you to learn practical self-defense.
