Trump Hikes Tariffs on Chinese Imports to 104%, Effective Tomorrow

President Donald Trump has officially raised tariffs on Chinese goods to a historic 104%, intensifying the ongoing trade conflict between the U.S. and China. The decision follows Trump’s 24-hour ultimatum to Beijing, demanding that China revoke its recently imposed 34% retaliatory tariff on American products. When China failed to comply, the U.S. responded with steep tariff increases.

The White House confirmed that this move fulfills Trump’s earlier warning of an “additional 50% tariff” on Chinese imports, which will take effect starting Wednesday. Previously, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods stood at 10%, but over the past month, rates have soared under Trump’s “reciprocal tariff” policy — an approach aimed at matching or exceeding the tariffs other nations impose on American exports.

As part of this policy, Trump had already raised tariffs on China by 34%, bringing the total to 44%. A separate announcement shortly after indicated a global 10% non-reciprocal tariff, justified by the administration as a means to boost U.S. federal reserves. This brought China's cumulative tariffs on U.S. goods to 54%.

With today’s additional 50% hike targeted solely at China, the total duty now imposed on Chinese products entering the U.S. has reached an unprecedented 104% — nearly doubling within a week. Despite the escalation, Trump hinted at the possibility of renewed dialogue, posting on Truth Social that, “China wants to strike a deal, desperately, but doesn’t know how to begin. We’re waiting for their call.”
