Lansing, MI - A man threatening sheriff’s deputies with knives was shot dead on a busy highway.

The Ingham County Sheriff’s office held a news conference late Monday afternoon.

In no time at all, Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth set the record straight on a clip being shared online. Leading to speculation that a man was handcuffed and shot by a sheriff’s deputy, which he says is untrue.

“Law enforcement officers make their decisions based on the totality of their circumstances, not a 2-dimensional video, that captures 10 seconds of a 13-plus-minute encounter,” said Wriggelsworth.

The footage he presented, showed the man armed with knives approaching a patrol car along US-127 in Vevay Township.

Body cam video shows the man attempting to advance at police, failing to comply during the 13-minute-long de-escalation period. The deputy attempted the use of a taser which was ineffective, leading to the man being shot. He later died after paramedics attempted to provide aid for around 25 minutes.

“Our deputies tried for 13 minutes to de-escalate the subject and repeatedly asked him to drop the knives. Those efforts were unsuccessful. The second video will clearly show the subject was not handcuffed and was advancing on law enforcement with knives in hand,” said Wriggelsworth.
