"Notes from the Underground" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a psychological novel first published in 1864. It is often considered one of the first existentialist works. The story features a nameless protagonist, often referred to as the Underground Man, who serves as a complex anti-hero grappling with deep existential and philosophical questions. First part of the book is a philosophical monologue where the narrator critiques rationalism, determinism, and utopian ideals. He explores themes like suffering, free will, and the irrational nature of human behavior. Second part delves into the narrator's personal experiences, including his interactions with others, which brings to focus his alienation and self-destructive tendencies.
