Carney Defends MP Who Made a China Bounty Joke

Paul Chiang, former Liberal MP and candidate, has resigned following backlash over a shocking interview where he joked that it would “help” if someone collected the Hong Kong police bounty on his Conservative opponent, Joe Tay—who is now reportedly fearful for his life.

The bounty—equivalent to $184,000 CAD—was issued by a foreign regime known for state executions and human rights abuses. But instead of condemning the remarks, Mark Carney defended Chiang, calling him a “person of integrity” and citing his police service.
