As Holy Week nears the end, we look back to Genesis, where four rivers flowed from Eden. A recent discovery beneath Christ’s burial site—the Church of the Holy Sepulcher—reveals ancient olive trees and grapevines, aligning with John 19:41: “...in the place where he was crucified there was a garden.” History and Scripture come together in the heart of Jerusalem.

As we near the end of what is known as "Holy Week", we start this report at the beginning; in the Book of Genesis. According to Genesis 2:10-14, four rivers flowed from the Garden of Eden. Those waters
branched out into four separate headwaters and they were: Pishon, Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates. With this in mind, we take a look at an article published in March by All Israel News that reports a
recent discovery led by Professor Francesca Romana Stasolla of Sapienza University. Archeologists began excavating the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a site believed to be the burial place of Christ in
Jerusalem, in 2022. As part of the church's renovation the team identified low stone walls and soil layer suitable for agriculture, indicating a transition from a quarry to cultivated ground and later, a burial site. The pollen and seeds discovered date back to a time between this land transition and the Roman age, when the area would have been used for funerary purposes. The team discovered olive trees and grapevines dating back to, you guessed it, 2,000 years. Stasolla is quoted by an article on this in the NY Post as saying the area has been a pilgrimage site since the 4th century but that "from a certain moment on, becomes central in the Christian cult." But the truth is that Christian Crusaders saved the site after the original structure was destroyed by Islamic ruler al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah in the year 1009 A.D. Now it seems like the quote "Christian cult" is right yet again, something history has known but science is now catching up to, and lines up with the Gospel of John in the Bible.
John 19:41 states that "...in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb." For those of you who don't know, Christ referred to himself as the Son of Man, alluding to the first man Adam. And in the end paradise will be restored in a new Eden.
