On the evening of April 3, 2025, a tragic collision occurred on Fern Valley Road in Louisville, resulting in the death of 61-year-old Charles Briscoe. The incident involved a Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) cruiser driven by Officer Alyssa Begel, who was responding to an EMS call on I-65 near the Watterson Expressway.

According to LMPD, Briscoe was turning into his apartment complex when his vehicle was struck by Officer Begel's cruiser. Briscoe was pronounced dead at the scene, while Officer Begel sustained injuries and was hospitalized, later being released on April 4.

Witnesses reported that Officer Begel's cruiser was traveling at high speed without activated emergency lights or sirens at the time of the crash. LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey confirmed that the officer did not have her lights and sirens on during the incident.

LMPD policy allows officers discretion in using emergency signals if deemed unsafe, but they are still required to consider the safety of other drivers.

Officer Begel, who joined LMPD in 2022, has received three reprimands, including one for a previous at-fault crash in October 2023.
