Ixopo is a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, located about 85 kilometers southeast of Pietermaritzburg in the Natal Midlands. Originally named Stuartstown after its first magistrate, Marthinus Stuart, in 1878, it later adopted its Zulu name, "Ixopo," derived from the onomatopoeic term "eXobo," mimicking the sound of cattle moving through mud. The town sits along the R56 highway on a tributary of the uMkhomazi River, surrounded by a diverse landscape of rolling hills and farmland, ranging from 400 to 1,800 meters in elevation.

Known for its scenic beauty, Ixopo is famously featured in Alan Paton’s novel Cry, the Beloved Country, which highlights its picturesque countryside. The town serves as the administrative hub of the Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality within the Harry Gwala District and is strategically positioned at the intersection of routes connecting Pietermaritzburg, the Drakensberg, the Eastern Cape, and the South Coast. Its economy is supported by cattle farming, timber, and sugar production, while its historical and cultural attractions draw visitors.

Ixopo boasts a rich heritage, with landmarks like the former Agricultural Hall (now a bank), two 19th-century churches still in use, and the Mariathal Mission, founded in 1887. The Buddhist Retreat Centre nearby, a Natural Heritage Site, enhances its spiritual appeal, as does a floodlit cross on Medal Hill, erected in 1972. The town also has ties to notable figures, such as Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, born there in 1960, and Cecil John Rhodes, who briefly farmed cotton in the area in 1870. With its tranquil setting, historical significance, and proximity to natural attractions like hiking trails and waterfalls, Ixopo offers a peaceful retreat steeped in history and natural beauty.
