The Abbey at Kylemore Galway

Kylemore Abbey, located in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, is one of the country's most iconic landmarks, featuring a rich blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
The Abbey, a stunning example of neo-Gothic and Victorian architecture, overlooks the picturesque Pollacapall Lough. Its turrets, towers, and battlements give it a romantic, castle-like appearance, blending seamlessly into the surrounding rugged landscape.
Originally built as a private residence in 1868 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy London doctor and politician, the house was constructed as a gift for his wife, Margaret.
Margaret tragically died from dysentery in 1874,The couple had been on holiday in Egypt when she contracted the illness,Her death at the age of 45 deeply affected Mitchell Henry, and in her memory, he commissioned the construction of the Church at Kylemore Abbey

The house was later purchased by Benedictine nuns in 1920, who turned it into an abbey. The nuns also ran an international boarding school at the abbey for many years, though the school has since closed. Today, the abbey remains an active monastery, and much of the house is open to the public as a tourist attraction.
