Alrighty, let's get this party started with the opening sequence to Small Soldiers, one of Jerry's later scores. Small Soldiers is a vastly underrated movie and has a phenomenal score by Jerry Goldsmith. This is the only selection on the Mix from that particular movie but it's got some other fantastic musical compositions on it that any fan of Jerry's work should definitely check out.

LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Two Song: First Meeting Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Total Recall OST Quote: Kuato, Total Recall Mix: Growltiger IN WHICH: Chris stands before a small cage at the Humane Society. From behind the bars, the male kitten peers upwards with hopeful eyes. Chris decides not to adopt him and goes to leave. The kitten grabs the bars of his cage in his claws and meows as hard as his little lungs can manage. Chris hears and looks back. Moved by something he doesn't fully understand, he decides to welcome the kitten into his home. This little gem is from Jerry's score for Total Recall (the original). I used it on the Mix GROWLTIGER which is about the life, death and rebirth of my cat Oliver. There are two other Jerry Goldsmith songs from Total Recall on that Mix and I REALLY wanted to put them in this collection right away but I'm right in the middle of upgrading GROWLTIGER song by song and I didn't want to skip ahead, so for now those two songs will remain in limbo. Once their upgrades are complete they will become a part of the Jerry Goldsmith Experience.

His contributions to both the series and the movies are nothing short of legendary. He scored the first Star Trek motion picture and it was in that movie that he originated the theme that would become synonymous with Star Trek: The Next Generation. A few years later he went on to create this masterpiece, the main theme to Star Trek: Voyager. Say what you want about the show (I liked it), this epic opening song perfectly represents everything that Star Trek stood for...Hope, Vision and the Spirit of Adventure.

John Williams, James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith at their very best in fifteen different movies spanning back to 1980. Buckle Up. THE POWER OF THREE consists of 5 sections with each composer taking a turn each section. The order of the composers could be any number of combinations. I was staring at the lineup and wondering why I had back-to-back similar sounding Jerry Goldsmith going on in the middle of the Mix. I asked myself from four years ago why I set it up that way. Past Chris told me to just go with it, it has something to do with the flow of the music later on in the Mix. So, yeah, uh, let's just go with it. But yeah, Star Trek, man. I fear it's lost without him and without Gene. But if you ever just want a taste of what Real Star Trek is really all about, just listen to this theme and get back to me. I was unable to decide between this theme and the Insurrection theme so I just put them both on, they are both magnificent in their own way. Jerry Goldsmith truly was a Master. May his vision through his music live on forever.

LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Five Song: It's a Good Life Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Twilight Zone: The Movie OST Quote: Rod Sterling/Twilight Zone Season 3 Episode 8: It's a Good Life Mix: Hippo 2.0 Remember this kid? Right, the one who can wish anything into and out of existence and knows everything you're thinking. That one. You wouldn't think something this terrifying would have such and eerie and beautiful theme, but that's the way Jerry Goldsmith rolled back in the day. This theme, which plays during the third vignette of Twilight Zone: The Movie, is classic Jerry at his absolute best. The entire Overture to the movie is over on THE MASTER SWORD, under the title The Three Sacred Flames (trust me, it makes sense for that Mix) and includes an even more intense version of this theme, along with the beloved theme to Kick the Can, the one where the old people in the nursing home turn into kids for one night and rediscover their joy. Only Jerry could have composed a piece of music that actually makes you feel that way. It's just one of the many gems he left behind for us.

LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Six Scene: Tangina's Monologue (Part 1) Artists: Jerry Goldsmith, Zelda Rubenstein Movie: Poltergeist (1982) Quote: Tangina/Poltergeist Mix: Sleepy Dragon Tangina's monologue from Poltergeist is one of the pivotal moments in the movie, thanks to Zelda Rubenstein's riveting performance paired with Jerry Goldsmith's exceptional score. I broke it into two parts for the Mix SLEEPY DRAGON and have put both parts on the Jerry Goldsmith Experience so that we may get the full effect of their dynamic brilliance.

This song here is what I like to call a "crowd pleaser". I don't know what it is about it....well actually I do, but I don't know why this PARTICULAR song attracts so many people who otherwise don't really care too much about orchestral movie scores. But attract them it does, and with good reason, because Jerry's main theme to Air Force One is one of those songs that just makes you feel...patriotic. I think it also has something to do with Harrison Ford and the fact that Air Force One is just such a great and memorable movie. So here it is, with a bow on it, JUST for you. LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Eight Scene: Tangina's Monologue (Part 2) Artists: Jerry Goldsmith, Zelda Rubenstein Movie: Poltergeist (1982) Quote: Tangina/Poltergeist Mix: Sleepy Dragon In this, the second part of Tangina's monologue from Poltergeist, both the music and the tone shift into darker and more ominous territory, which in the end is what Poltergeist is all about. The dread this scene inspires is second to none.

"You are one of the chosen many, flesh and blood. It is now your destiny to fight the Eternal Darkness.. You hold one of Mantorok’s hearts. To some it is a source of great power. I have a hard time deciding which of the first two Poltergeist movies has the better score. Jerry's work on both of them is nothing short of astonishing. I used several songs from Poltergeist 2: The Other Side on the Mix ETERNAL DARKNESS, this being the opening song for that Mix. Yeah, in the end I have decided NOT to decide. It's all Jerry and it's all awesome.

Here we have Jerry Goldsmith's painfully beautiful beginning credit scene score for Star Trek: Insurrection. Jerry did a TON of work on the Star Trek series during his life, including the score to Star Trek: The Motion Picture as well as the theme to Star Trek: Voyager to name just a few. For now, let's just bask in the melody of his God-given talent.

LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Eleven Song: Overture Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Twilight Zone: The Movie OST Quote: Hyrule Historia, Dark Horse Books, pg. 75 Mix: The Master Sword THE MASTER SWORD is a Mix I made years ago, long before I ever imagined I would ever display it publically. That being so, I had to change the titles of some of the tracks so that the origin story of The Legend of Zelda would make sense. This is one of those tracks. So while the title may read "The Three Sacred Flames", this composition by Jerry Goldsmith comes from his fantastic score for Twilight Zone: The Movie. It contains three separate themes from the vignettes of that terrifying masterpiece, which is why I used it this way. I just wanted to clear up any confusion that may arise from the title.

John Williams, James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith at their very best in fifteen different movies spanning back to 1980. Buckle Up. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that not very many of you listening have ever heard this song. But it's quite possible that you have seen the movie Legend. The troubles Legend had when it first came out in 1985 were, quite frankly, legendary. The movie apparently had such terrible test screenings that the producers tried just about everything they could to make it more appealing to the audience. Scenes were cut, dialogue changed, you name it. And THEN the decision was made to strip the movie of the score that was written specifically for it by Jerry Goldsmith. That score was replaced with a new one by Tangerine Dream which is what i'm sure 99% of all people who have seen the movie remember. Now....this is the ONLY time you will EVER hear me say anything like this. I like the score from Tangerine Dream more than the Jerry Goldsmith score. I think they made the right move. It could be nostalgia, it could be because I was 11 years old at the time. But for whatever reason, the Tangerine Dream score just "works" better for Legend. But that in NO way diminishes the incredible work that Jerry did on the first score. This song, THE RING, plays at the end of the movie when Jack (Tom Cruise) dives into the lake for the lost wedding ring and puts it on Lily's (Mia Sarah's) finger. Jerry's score is much more whimsical, less "cool" i suppose, and yet it has some incredible themes in it, the Unicorn Theme being a standout. These days you can watch either the Theatrical Version with the Tangerine Dream score or the Director's Cut with Jerry's score. If you haven't experienced it before, give the Director's Cut a try. But, if you are like me, you will gravitate to the Theatrical release and listen to Jerry's score on your favorite Internet Music Mix Channel to experience it's legendary brilliance.

LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Thirteen Song: Late Call Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Poltergeist 2: The Other Side OST Quote: Dame Eyola/The Never Ending Story Mix: Eternal Darkness IN WHICH: As the Darkness of corruption and insanity relentlessly encroaches upon us, the Light gathers together in the name of the Lord to stand against it. SPIRIT: "Be strong and take heart, all who hope in the Lord." - Psalm 31:25 ETERNAL DARKNESS is another Mix which, like THE MASTER SWORD, required me to take a few liberties with the song titles in order for the Mix to make sense. I don't do this anymore but I'd just like to clarify that this composition is entitled "Late Call" and comes from Jerry's hauntingly beautiful score for Poltergiest 2: The Other Side.

“The fact that certain composers have been able to create first-class music within the medium of film proves that film music can be as good as the composer is gifted.” LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Fifteen Song: Escape Bubbles Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Leviathan OST Quote: Jerry Goldsmith Mix: Trinity This second song I used from LEVIATHAN is classic Jerry in every sense of the word. This song plays at the very climax of the movie when apparently they are able to rise miles from the ocean floor to the surface in minutes with the woman wearing a string bikini and nothing else. Oh, movie magic! But the magic of Jerry Goldsmith's music is absolutely undeniable. Listen to the end and let me know if a smile breaks out on your face. Great stuff.

"DON'T LOOK BACK!!!" LATER DAYS: The Jerry Goldsmith Experience: Track Sixteen Song: Escape from Suburbia Artist: Jerry Goldsmith Album: Poltergeist OST Quote: Steven Freeling (Craig T. Nelson)/Poltergeist Mix: Sleepy Dragon In the end it always comes back to Poltergeist for me. I saw this movie when I was seven and it affected me to such a degree that it became my favorite movie of all time. It was also the first time I ever experienced Jerry Goldsmith's music for myself. I used this song as the climax for the Mix Sleepy Dragon, which combines Poltergeist with the Never Ending Story in interesting and unexpected ways. I had originally just put the song up but decided later to go ahead and put the entire ending scene from Poltergeist on the Mix. It is one of the most intense and satisfying endings in movie history and is scored to absolute perfection by Jerry Goldsmith.

"When I get a fantasy film job, the first thing I look for is the non-fantasy element to build the music upon. The human side of the film is what's important, not the hardware. My work on 'Poltergeist' is a perfect example. Most people saw it as a ghost story and a horror story. I saw it as a love story and wrote the music with that emotion in mind." When I was seven years old we had just gotten cable for the first time. My parents went out of town and a babysitter came to stay with us. POLTERGEIST was showing on HBO and it was a free weekend for that channel. So she watched it and I watched the whole thing with her. And that was it. The entire movie was seared onto my soul forevermore in that moment. Everything came from that movie. The sheer spectacular horror of it all is incredibly tense and frightening for anybody who experiences it. But a seven year old? There's something about the ages between seven and nine where I think our strongest impressions are formed, the ones that last a lifetime. So of course you'll understand when I say that, without a doubt, POLTERGEIST is the greatest Motion Picture ever made. And then of course there's Jerry. There is something about this particular score that is utterly unlike anything else I've ever heard, even from him. It is sweeping, tender, strange, bombastic, beautiful, harrowing...well, I could I go on but I think you get the point. It's incredible. CAROL ANNE'S THEME is probably one of the most recognizable songs in all of cinema. Anybody who has seen the movie and hears the beautiful yet creepy singing voices of these children most likely feels the same way I feel...a mixture of appreciation for the beauty of the melody with a slight but definite unease at the evil lurking just beneath the surface. Or maybe it's just me. All I know is that seeing a man rip his face off at seven years old to bizarre orchestral music really does something to you. And so we have come Full Circle. I hope you have enjoyed this showcase of Jerry Goldsmith, one of the greatest composers in movie history.
