As a tenured academic professor within a business school at a private liberal arts college in the Philadelphia region, I share my experience on what it's like to pursue an academic career.

The main three components of an academic life are research, teaching, and service - probably in that decreasing order. Research is typically how you get hired and promoted. Some institutions value teaching highly, while others prioritize research. As you become senior, service becomes a bigger component. Considering if you may enjoy these roles may help you discover if academia is for you. Of course, good grades are essential!

Visiting other parts of the world is attractive. Travel can be a big component with conferences, research trips and short visits teaching. Every day can be different too with opportunity to learn. As my father used to say, teaching in the college setting can also keep you young as you are surrounded by young adults and constantly updated on current events and trends.

One attractive aspect of joining the ranks of academic intelligentsia is the status and kudos associated after years of training (input) and contributing to the advancement of societal knowledge (output). Some are invited as expert interviewees by the media.

Keeping up with your profession is important well beyond the PhD, especially with the ever increasing bar of publication standards. Publishing is the main avenue for tenure and promotion. Some move between academia and industry (public vs private) and between the US, dominating most academic fields, and the rest of the world. Extra perks include tax write-offs, meals / travel / research expenses, rubbing elbows with elites... And the much coveted academic freedom allows us latitude for "task freedom": researching what we want, within certain, wide limits.
