British James to Russia at a time when everyone was saying that one should never go there, in 2022. What drove him was curiosity: was it really as bad and dangerous here as the global media claimed? The average Brit's perception of Russia is very limited: it's cold, dark, and it doesn't stop snowing.

Having lived for more than two years in Russia, James has come to believe that it is not Russia but the UK that is a dangerous country. Traditional family values there have been replaced by a culture of permissiveness. The woke culture and the fight for imagined equal rights have led to a situation where being a reasonable person means being in the minority and facing accusations and harassment. For this reason, James does not intend to return to Britain, fearing that he could end up in prison for his thoughts.

In Russia, James teaches British English, including to his Russian wife, Katya). When they met, James didn't know a word of Russian, and Katya didn't speak English. Now, the couple has a daughter, and they dream that she will speak both of her parents' languages.
