474 Does Scripture have One Meaning or a Plurality of Meanings

Virtually all scholars agree that scripture has many applications. But some scholars claim that scripture has only one meaning, that is fixed, definite and dictated by the plain literal reading, unless clear evidence indicates that certain literary devices are being employed (e.g. Poetry, metaphor, simile, etc.). Other scholars claim that the meanings of scripture are plural, and is employs many more non-literal literary devices than are accepted by other scholars. Which position is correct?
