Emerald Boas

The northern emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus) has a life cycle that begins with live birth, as the species is ovoviviparous—females retain eggs internally and give birth to fully formed neonates.

A typical litter consists of 6 to 14 young, which are born brightly colored, often in shades of red, orange, or yellow.

As they mature, usually over 12 to 24 months, their coloration shifts to the iconic emerald green with white dorsal markings.

They reach sexual maturity around 3 to 4 years of age.

Throughout their lives, which can span 15 to 20 years in captivity, these arboreal snakes remain solitary, ambush predators, feeding primarily on birds and small mammals.
