🎶 Call It Charity (Where’s the Mercy?)
The Salvation Army Blues 🎶
(Verse 1)
I wake up every morning in this cold, gray room,
Counting my dollars—yeah, they’re gone too soon.
The rent is high, and my check runs dry,
By the time they’re done, I got seven bucks to survive.
They say I’m rich—man, I just laugh,
While they pay some workers a buck a week.
They take what they want, leave nothing for me,
While the staff begs for hours just to make ends meet.
(Pre-Chorus)
March 29th, a knock on my door,
A tenant says, “Hey, will you sign just one more?”
The workers keep quitting, they can’t pay their bills,
And we sit here praying—it don’t help them still.
(Chorus)
Oh, the Salvation Army pays no taxes,
But they take every penny like it’s practice.
I try to fight, I try to complain,
But the Ombudsperson says, “That ain't my lane.”

(Verse 2)
October came, they said, “Here’s the new deal—
$1,228.06—sounds like a steal.”
But come April 1st, they took some more,
$1,308.26 walked out the door.
Then not once, not twice, not even three times—
On the fourth try, they took $1,349.
Then they slapped on a fee—$222.60—
For the three months they couldn’t rob me quickly.
Now I can’t afford meds, can’t even buy rice,
I filed my taxes, I played it nice.
But they said, “Give us your whole check tonight!”
I showed my proof—they said, “That’s your fight.”
(Bridge – True Story)
Fri, Apr. 11, 11:03 AM —
I get an email, like, “Here's the plan.”
“I found someone to finish your taxes today,
Just need your okay, and I’ll set it your way.”
But my worker already filed—my taxes were done,
Here’s what the tax lady said, every one:
“I filed your 2024 return, it’s complete,
Applied for your renters grant—400 bucks, sweet!”
“CRA will mail your NOA to Kerr Street.”
Now the money’s in my bank—I see the receipt.
Got the CRA notice—the proof is right here,
But The Salvation Army said, “Nah, that ain’t clear.”
That’s the third damn time—they block and deny,
And every time I ask, they just pass it by.
They keep taking what's mine like it's some kind of game,
And every time I push, they just shift the blame.

(Spoken or Softly Sung)
Call it charity—but where’s the mercy?
They take your money, they take your pride,
They leave you broke with no place to hide.
And when you call for help, what do they do?
They shrug their shoulders and ignore you too.
They’re painting the walls and fixing the place,
But inside these halls, there’s no saving grace.

(Final Chorus – Stronger)
Oh, the Salvation Army pays no taxes,
But they still put the squeeze on the helpless masses.
The Ombudsperson just shakes their head,
Says, “Sorry, old man, you’re stuck instead.”

(Outro – Soft, Reflective)
So here I sit, just trying to get by,
Wonderin’ how I’ll make it till the day I die.
Seven bucks left, and I can’t buy stew,
Guess there’s really nothin’ this man can do.

The Bigger Picture,

This isn’t just about me,
It’s also the workers that work in the Salvation Army

Plus, this is about every vulnerable person who has been ignored, dismissed, or failed by a system that allows organizations like The Salvation Army to operate without accountability.,

I’m sharing my story because it’s time for change. No one should have to fight just to be treated fairly—especially those who rely on organizations that claim to help the vulnerable.,

The Salvation Army claims to be a nonprofit, not a charity, but their focus seems to be on securing as much funding as possible. (Where is all the money really going?)
