"Lady in Black" is a song by the British rock band Uriah Heep, released in 1971 on their album Salisbury. Written by keyboardist Ken Hensley, who also sang lead vocals, it’s a folk-rock ballad with a haunting melody and introspective lyrics. The song tells the story of a man wandering through a war-torn world who encounters a mysterious, goddess-like woman in black. She offers wisdom, urging peace over violence, and consoles him, leaving him with renewed hope. The lyrics reflect a longing for an end to war and evil, with the lady symbolizing compassion or a higher moral guide—interpretations range from a divine figure like Kuan Yin or the Virgin Mary to cultural archetypes like Freedom or even Death, depending on the listener’s perspective.

Musically, it’s simple yet powerful, built on two chords (A minor and G major) with acoustic guitars, drums, and later bass and keyboards. The repetitive "Ah, ah, ah" chant in the chorus is iconic and a fan favorite at live shows. Notably, lead singer David Byron refused to sing it, finding it too "banal," so Hensley stepped in. The song’s stripped-down recording included roadies playing two of the four acoustic guitars due to its simplicity
