In 1984, Prof. Dr. med. Robert W.D. Gorter started his career at the University of California San Francisco Medical School (UCSF) and almost immediately made an associate professor at two departments at the same time: the Department of internal medicine and the Department of Family & Community Medicine.
In addition, 2 years later the medical director of the Department of AIDS Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Her, in addition, he had approximately 95 coworkers working under his supervision and direction. He played a significant role in developing vaccines and the successful use of Viscum album (the European mistletoe).

Today, at age 80, he is still very active as a virologist and an immunologist and an oncologist.
Since 2000, he is the initiator of using dendritic cells in cancer patients and for which his group received the Nobel Prize in 2011.
