A Book Burning
To the Delegates and Voters of NC District 11:
Why would Michelle Woodhouse’s husband suggest burning every copy of the King James Version of the Bible?
In a January 30, 2023 email titled “To the Unapologetic HVL Brethren,” Eddie Woodhouse wrote:
“Twelve people – up from four – assembled, all with Bibles in hand, ready to rock and roll! (And thank you for reading from modern translations!
Maybe one of our service projects will be to host a book-burning of every possible copy of the KJV).”
This post is not about debating the merits of the King James Version (KJV) versus modern English Bible translations.
The KJV, based on the Textus Receptus, is viewed by some as a more reliable source than the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus, which form the basis for many modern versions.
For over 400 years, the KJV has been a cornerstone of English literature, profoundly influencing both language and culture across the English-speaking world. Written in the same era and region as Shakespeare, it reflects the poetic language characteristic of that time.
A collaboration of dozens of biblical scholars, it stands as one of the most significant literary accomplishments of all time.
No matter your preference of Bible translation—or even if you have none at all—most people would find the idea of calling for another version to be eradicated through a book-burning unimaginable.
What kind of authoritarian mindset drives someone to make such a comment? And does a statement like that have any place in a nation founded on religious freedom?
Imagine the reaction if the spouse of a political candidate had called for the burning of the holy book of any other faith.
We all know that if Eddie Woodhouse had suggested burning every copy of the Torah or the Quran, it would become a national news story within hours.
How exactly does Eddie Woodhouse envision carrying out “a book burning of every possible copy of the KJV”? If you own a copy in your home and choose not to offer it up for his book-burning event, what does he believe should happen next?
Michelle Woodhouse is running for NC District 11 GOP Chair on April 26. Voters deserve to know: Does she agree with her husband that every copy of the King James Bible should be destroyed?
