Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a standalone prequel to the 2014 first-person shooter game Wolfenstein: The New Order, developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released on May 5, 2015, it’s available on platforms like PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The game serves as an expansion of sorts, delivering a self-contained story that dives deeper into the alternate-history universe where the Nazis won World War II.
Set in 1946, The Old Blood follows series protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz as he undertakes a two-part mission. The first part, "Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves," has B.J. infiltrating Castle Wolfenstein to steal coordinates to General Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse’s compound. Naturally, things go sideways, and he ends up captured, facing off against a sadistic prison warden. The second part, "The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs," shifts to the town of Wulfburg, where B.J. uncovers a Nazi plot involving occult artifacts, leading to battles against supernatural foes like shamblers—zombie-like creatures—alongside the usual Nazi soldiers.
Gameplay sticks to the fast-paced, visceral style of The New Order. You’re dual-wielding shotguns, sniping from rooftops, or meleeing enemies with a pipe that doubles as a climbing tool. It’s a mix of stealth and all-out action, with a slightly less open-ended feel than its successor—more of a tight, linear romp. The tone blends gritty war vibes with over-the-top B-movie schlock, complete with Nazi zombies and arcane weirdness. Critics praised its gunplay and visuals, though some felt the story leaned too hard into pulp clichés and didn’t match The New Order’s narrative depth.
It’s built on the id Tech 5 engine, giving it that chunky, detailed look MachineGames is known for, and it runs at a smooth clip. The Old Blood isn’t reinventing the wheel—it’s an 8-10 hour blast of retro-inspired FPS chaos, a love letter to the Wolfenstein legacy that started back in 1981 with Castle Wolfenstein.
